Hi Viz Policies Summary

Enhancing Safety for Senior and Junior Runners

At Harrogate Harriers & AC, the safety and well-being of our members is our highest priority. As a running club that prides itself on fostering a positive and inclusive environment, we believe it is essential to implement a Hi Viz Policy to ensure the visibility and safety of both our senior and junior runners during training sessions.

Effective from late September each year, this policy requires all Harrogate Harriers & AC members, regardless of age or running level, to wear high visibility reflective vests or equivalent while participating in club activities that take place in low-light conditions or involve busy roadways. By adhering to this policy, we aim to minimise the risk of accidents and enhance the overall safety of our members. In addition, some seniors training sessions will require participants to have head torches.

Why a Hi Viz Policy?

Promoting Visibility
High visibility clothing significantly increases the visibility of runners, making them more easily identifiable to motorists, cyclists, and other pedestrians. This improved visibility helps to prevent accidents and allows our members to feel confident and secure during their runs.

Enhancing Road Safety
As runners, we often share the roads with vehicles, especially during early morning or evening runs. The implementation of the Hi Viz Policy ensures that our members are visible to drivers, reducing the likelihood of accidents and creating a safer running environment for everyone.

Setting a Good Example for Junior Runners
Our senior runners serve as role models for our junior athletes, teaching them the importance of safety and responsible running practices. By adhering to the Hi Viz Policy, our senior members can lead by example and instil in our younger runners the significance of wearing high visibility gear.

What Constitutes High Visibility Clothing?

High visibility clothing can include, but is not limited to, the following items:

  • Brightly coloured shirts, jackets, or vests

  • Reflective bands or belts

  • LED lights for additional visibility

  • Reflective stickers or patches on clothing or accessories

  • Flashing lights or reflective armbands

It is important to note that while wearing high visibility clothing is mandatory, it does not replace other necessary safety measures such as obeying traffic rules, ensuring proper hydration, or wearing suitable running shoes.

Responsibility and Enforcement

As a part of the Harrogate Harriers & AC community, all members share the responsibility for ensuring the proper implementation and adherence to the Hi Viz Policy. Club coaches and run leaders are encouraged to remind members of this requirement during training sessions and club events.
While we do not wish to enforce strict penalties or disciplinary actions, it is important for members to recognise that neglecting to wear high visibility clothing may result in being unable to participate in club activities until compliance is achieved.

Together, We Promote Safety

The implementation of the Hi Viz Policy reinforces Harrogate Harriers & AC's commitment to the well-being of our members. By working together to improve visibility and safety on the roads, we can enjoy our runs confidently, knowing that we are taking responsible steps to prevent accidents and ensure the continued success of our club.

Remember, high visibility is not just a requirement; it is a means of protecting ourselves and promoting a culture of safety within our running community. So please embrace the Hi Viz Policy and continue to build a stronger, safer, and more inclusive Harrogate Harriers & AC.
